Problem

At the time, Beachbody lacked a gamified feature within its digital products. Without this, users may experience a lack of motivation, or disengagement over time. The absence of interactive elements may hinder user progress and adherence to fitness goals. Additionally, competition and social interaction, which are common motivators in fitness, were currently missing from the digital experience.

Solution

By integrating a gamified experience into the suite of digital products, Beachbody enhances user engagement, motivation, and retention. Through personalized challenges, social interaction, and rewards, users will be empowered to achieve their fitness goals while enjoying a fun and immersive digital experience. From a business standpoint, it also allows Beachbody remain compeitive in the fitness space.

Scope of Work

This project required dedicating substantial time to both research and visual design. Balancing these tasks ensured the creation of a cohesive and engaging gamified experience to integrate in to Beachbody’s products.

Process

Competitive Analysis

The first step was to analyze what competitors were doing to identify successful elements and mechanics that resonate with users. It was important evaluate strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities posed by their offerings.

Initial User Flow

Beachbody’s suite of products are part of a complex ecosystem, so it was crucial to nail down the various access points to ensure a seamless user experience.

Share Flow Wireframes

Nailing down this flow was essential, enabling users to effortlessly share badges with friends via BODgroups and social media from the "share" menu, while also providing the option to download the image for personalized sharing.

Design

Badges

Tactile, metallic badges, change in color as users level up within categories, symbolizing important milestones in a fitness journey.

All unearned badges begin in grayscale and as a user progresses thorugh a category, they transition to color.

Share Screens

When a badge is earned, a celebratory modal appears with a unique, vibrant design and motivational copy. From that point, users have the option to share the accomplishment through various channels.

Final Solution

Badges Access Point

Badges are accessed via the account section of the site/app. This gives an overview of all their personal stats, recent activity and progress, which tie into earning badges.

Badges Home

The hub where users can browse their achievements and upcoming milestones. The "Up Next" module showcases up to three badges a user is close to earning, while tapping any badge aggregate reveals the specific badges within each category.

Badge Details

Here, users can easily view all milestones within a specific category, including both earned and unearned badges, alongside their current badge and progress towards the next one.

Celebration Modal

Designed to make the moment of a user earning a badge feel special and inspiring. It is also where sharing to social media or BODGroups is initiated.

Gamification on Bike

The feature maintains parity on various Beachbody platforms such as web, app, bike and TV so all info stays up to date. The UI was retooled for the Beachbody bike specifically to make for a better experience on a large, horizontal touchscreen.
